Bible Text- Mark 11:1-11
Key Verse- Mark 11:9
And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. -Mark 11:9
Jesus’ last week on Earth is monumental as it is described by all four of the Gospels. Each writer of the Gospels gives an account of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Many would think that since Jesus was the prophesied king, his triumphant entrance would be that of a king’s status. However, he did not enter the town with the pomp and circumstance of a king, but lowly in character as he had been since his entrance to Earth.
The King Prepares (Mark 11:1-6)
This passage of scripture would be the only time that Jesus rode an animal. He gave two of his disciples specific instructions. Their task was to go into town and bring back to him the donkey which he would make his triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. The prophecy stated in Zachariah 9:9 was getting ready to be fulfilled “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Jesus explained to his disciples that no one had ever ridden the donkey, which is important because then the animal would not be clean and worthy to carry the King.
Not only did Jesus explain to his disciples, where the donkey would be tied, but he also gave them the words that would serve as the passwords to allow them to take the donkey. Jesus told that when someone asked what they were doing to say that the Lord needed it and would send it back shortly.
Point to Ponder: Do you follow the instructions of the Holy Spirit even when it doesn’t make sense to others or even yourself?
The King Arrives (Mark 11:7-11)
As the King was coming they “spread their garments in the way” and “cut down branches off the trees” to cover his path. The crowd reverenced and adored Him by shouting “Hosanna!” They praised him with expectation as the meaning of Hosanna is to save now. In Him they rejoiced, as they knew that He was the one who would fulfill the promise. The people also rejoiced and shouted that he was, “Blessed.” His “kingdom” is “blessed.” He is the one that“cometh in the name of the Lord!” The King has arrived! The King has come!“Blessed is he!”
Point to Ponder: Do you get excited inwardly and outwardly about the presence of God?
Don’t you love good news? The prophesy has been fulfilled. Jesus is the one who is to come lowly riding on a donkey. Even better, He is the one who is mighty to save! As we enter into this Holy Week, let us shout Hosanna in the highest!
