Obeying God While Facing Adversity

“Don’t worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper” (Psalm 37:1-3,  NLT).

Obeying God While Facing Adversity:  How many times have we honestly thought to ourselves or asked God the following questions: Why is this person getting away with treating me like this? I need to do something to make sure they don’t do that again. I try so hard to do right so why is this happening to me? — We have all been guilty of doing this. It is not easy to stand by and “do nothing” when we feel that others are being mistreated or we are ourselves.  Admittedly, sometimes we can do things that might cause us to understand why people act a certain way, but it is really a hard pill to swallow when you know that you haven’t done anything.

Spiritual Manifestation:   So what do you do when it appears that your adversaries have the upper hand?  God instructs us to trust Him and do good.  Ouch!  Do good to whom? Certainly not to the person that seems like their only purpose for waking up each day is to scheme against you. I have also learned that it helps to do good to the ones that are innocent. Sometimes we withhold our kindness on people because of the treatment we have received or are receiving from others. Not only does God tell us not to worry about the wicked, He also tells us what is going to happen to them. Therefore, it would not be wise to start acting like the enemy.

David had to learn to “Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act” (v.7a).  About two years ago, I really had to live out that verse. For awhile, I allowed what verse eight warned “Stop being angry! Turn from your rage! Do not lose your temper-it only leads to harm.”   When we allow the actions of others to negatively affect us, it causes us to be unhealthy in the mind and body.   When we are facing our adversary through God’s obedience, we have the assurance that “the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the LORD will possess the land” (v. 9).  Choose to Walk in Obedience!
