Practice Makes Perfect

2011 Theme:  “MAKE GOD GREATER!”

“They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.”  Judges 2:19b NIV

Practice Makes Perfect:  Before you learned how to walk, you fell down many times. Before you completed a sentence and connected them to form a paragraph, you had to learn the alphabets and words. It took practice before you could accomplish or be made perfect in these areas. Practice does make perfect. What you become perfect in is up to you. A criminal did not become skilled in his way of thinking over night. He or she was first a child that found it cute to steal candy, cleaver to take money from mom’s purse and embraced the challenge to take an item out of a store.  What ever you practice becomes a natural habit. Habits, although difficult to unlearn, can be broken.  The Israelites developed a bad habit of spiritual amnesia and disobedience to God. Every time God manifested a promise, they soon forgot the instructions and commandments attached. When He gave them a warning and a choice, they often refused to give up the things that were causing them separation from God.

“Whatever you have learned or received or heard  from me, or seen in me- put it into practice.” Philippians 4:9a

Spiritual Manifestation: Professing Christianity means that we are Christ-like; we are daily being perfected.  Each day through our thoughts, actions and decisions we are looking more and more like Christ. This can not be accomplished if we are not practicing what the Word teaches us. Like the Israelites, our rebellion will give other gods permission to have authority in our lives. God prophesied through Jeremiah that “your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good” (5:25).  We have to be careful not to allow our hearts to become harden. There are good things awaiting us but we allow ourselves to interfere with reception. What practice do you need to unlearn?  What do you need to put into practice? The answer to both is in this question:  What will make God greater in your life?  He has given a warning and the choice is now ours!
