The Sacrifice of Loving

Answer to Bible trivia (2.1.11): Love is expressed as a noun and verb, along with participial forms. The main forms are Agape (John 17:26), Agapeo (Matt. 5:46), Ahab (Genesis 29:32), Ra yah (Song 2:10), Phileo (Luke 20:46), Philadelphia (Romans 12:10)

“..if anyone would come after me, he must deny himself  and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23b, NIV).

The Sacrifice of Loving: “I give myself away, so you can use me, I give myself away..Here I am, Here I stand..Take my Heart, Take my life as a living sacrifice..I give myself away” are lyrics to the William McDowell’s worship song.  In the highlighted text, Jesus is teaching the disciples about the cost of serving, following Him. Also in the passage, He tells them about His greatest sacrifice, the Cross! When you love some one you endure pain, suffering, and even denial of self. Some times these sacrifices are easier to make with people we love. But what about those that are not as easy to love or even the ones we dislike?  Since we have decided to follow Jesus, we have decided to obey His Word. Yes, it does hurt to have to forgive someone that has caused you pain, to pray blessings for those that have cursed you, to be good to those that have prejudged you and to accept those that have rejected you. When Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice, He did not hand pick those that would benefit.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a).

Spiritual Manifestation: There is a sacrifice in loving, but it is worth the sacrifice. Jesus sacrificed not only for those that accepted him, but those that initially rejected, mistreated and abused Him. This is the fruit of His spirit; the same Fruit of the Spirit we are to posses. You want to receive more of GOD? Try giving yourself away to others; your gifts, time, and love. The more you give yourself away, the more of Him you will receive. After awhile, you might find yourself looking more like Him.  Make GOD Greater!
